Located on the north western shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto is the largest city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario, as well as being widely considered as the Canadian economic capital. With its low crime rate, clean environment and high standard of living, Toronto has become a popular destination for tourists throughout the world.
With no single dominant architectural style, Toronto is home to many impressive structures that appeal to a broad range of tourists. Undoubtedly the most stunning and popular attraction in the city is the CN Tower, the world’s second tallest freestanding structure, which defines the Toronto skyline at a height of over 550 metres. While the Tower’s main purpose is to serve as a communications tower for a number of different media companies, the sheer magnificence of the structure has made it a centre for tourism in Toronto, with many visitors eager to make the trip up the Tower to soak in the stunning view over Toronto from the observation deck that stands 447 metres off the ground.
Toronto also features many attractions which are both rich in culture and of historical significance. The Royal Ontario Museum is considered a major museum for world culture and natural history while the Art Gallery of Ontario contains a large collection of Canadian, European, African and contemporary artwork. Toronto also boasts the only museum in Canada entirely devoted to ceramics, namely the Gardiner Museum, which contains more than 2900 ceramic works from Asia, the Americas and Europe. The Canadian National Exhibition, held annually at Exhibition Place, also features a number of parades, events and many international shopping and dining opportunities. Since the first event in 1878, “The Ex”, as it’s popularly known, has become the oldest annual fair in the world and achieves an average attendance of 1.25 million people.
Many tourists also flock to Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood, officially the most popular tourist destination in Toronto due to its reputation as one of the most elegant shopping and dining areas in the city. During events such as the Toronto International Film Festival, celebrities from all over North America can be spotted in the area, packing the luxury hotels in the vicinity.
Toronto also boasts a number of options for sports enthusiasts visiting the city. As with most major cities in Canada, ice hockey is the most popular sport among the locals, with the Toronto Maple Leafs being the hometown heroes. With 14 Stanley Cup titles under their belts, tourists can be promised a fine display in hockey excellence should they decide to take in a game at the impressive Air Canada Centre. Other popular sports in the city include basketball, football and major league soccer.
So, whether you’re a sports aficionado, a culture and history buff or simply enjoy fine dining and shopping, Toronto truly has something for everyone.
