Scotland is a popular destination as it is seen as a clean, unspoilt country, with beautiful scenery, home to a complex history and lots of historic sites. Many tourists are drawn to the culture of Scotland and the many castles, battlegrounds, museums and ruins that are there.
The cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh are being seen as cosmopolitan and are in turn drawing more tourists to Scotland, with the main tourist season being from April to October.
In addition to these factors, the national tourist agency, VisitScotland, have deployed a strategy of niche marketing, aimed at exploiting Scotland's strengths in golf, fishing and food and drink tourism. Another increasingly popular reason for tourism to Scotland - especially by those from North America - is genealogy, with many visitors coming to Scotland to explore their family and ancestral roots.
A lot of tourists who don’t come to Scotland for the cities are coming to visit the beautiful countryside, and many of these people decide to camp instead of stay in more traditional accommodation. One area that is popular with Campers is Ayrshire, a region in the south west of Scotland.
The main towns of Ayshire are Ayr Scotland, Irvine and Kilmarnock. The town of Troon (pop. 20,000) on the coast has hosted the British Open Golf Championship twice in the last seven years, eight times in total. Approximately 200,000 visitors come to Troon during this period.
Ayshire is among the most agriculturally fertile regions in Scotland. Along the coasts, fields of Potatoes are grown using a seaweed based fertiliser. The region is also known for its pork, root vegetables, cattle and summer berries.
In terms of tourism, Ayrshire is one of Scotland’s most popular tourist destinations for families or couples, especially when it comes to camping. The area offers beautiful waters and clean beaches on the firth of Clyde.
A lot of couples come to stay on a caravan site in Scotland, Turnberry holiday park is a popular choice, as it has a breathtaking view of the island Ailsa Craig and its bird Sanctuary. Nearby is the sea side town of Girvan, which has tourist amenities and a leisure center. Other attractions in the area are Culzean castle, local fishing facilities, Golf course and Turnberry hotel which has leisure facilities.
