The Importance of Spiritual Travel

Sure, there are always real-life issues that get in the way of what you want to do. It is very important-- some would even call it essential-- to make sure there is time for your own personal and spiritual growth in your life. Yes, necessities such as eating, drinking water, breathing and sleeping do come first in a very survival-oriented way, but what really sets humans apart from other animals is our intellect. Unlike most animals, we do not spend the majority of our time engaged in basic survival activities. With so much time to devote to other activities, what excuse is there not to take the spiritual journey or the spiritual pilgrimage that your soul deeply desires?
This is not to say that you cannot reconnect with yourself, with divinity and with the earth at any time, in any place. On the contrary, that is often what people bring away from spiritual travel. It often takes a spiritual journey to "move" you before you really awaken to this reality. Once you have experienced it in such intensity, you can then take it home and allow it to become a natural practice. Many people find that once they visit some of the traditional sacred sites, they actively seek to go on a spiritual pilgrimage again and again. There are so many holy sites in the world that can be visited, or you can seek to experience some of nature's more spectacular sights, which can be spiritual destinations in and of themselves.
The very thought that there are certain sights that will inspire a spiritual awakening in all people is a bit silly, but truth be told, there are some places that are really that powerful. There are experiences that no one could walk away from unchanged. The difference is often made up in the mindset. If you set out to take a spiritual journey, then that's what you will experience. If you are simply along for the ride, you may or may not be affected to the same degree. No one can do it for you, all they can do is show you the way to the wonders and let you take away from them what you will. Chances are, if you have a yearning to go someplace, there is something there for you that you need to experience. Don't let the illusion of your life's importance where it is stop you from having the experience of a lifetime.
