When you are a student, you form many habits that are suitable for a student environment and without being harsh, that environment only. Some of student habits can be legendary amongst your piers, but when you have graduated, you will need to condemn some of your student habits to the past.
Here are a few habits that you should really change if you wish to either land a graduate job, or possibly more importantly keep one once you have one!
Your mobile phone's ring tone!
As much as you may like to hear Homer Simpson or Eric Cartman yell at the top of his voice, or you could have fond memories of it playing while you were in lectures. However if you inflict the noise amongst your new work colleagues, or even worse during an interview, you won't score many points! It may sound boring, but you should really change your ring tone to a simple phone ringing sound. Failing this, keep it on silent mode!
No more student jumpers!
Just about everybody has a favourite jumper that serves them well throughout their student years. If your yet to graduate, take a look around in your lecture hall and you will be surprised at home many people seem to be stuck to a particular garment. If you want to make the right impression in your new workplace, leave the jumper for your personal time, i.e. away from work! While you're at it, leave your character tie, whether it's Muppets, mickie mouse or any other non professional tie needs to be kept away from your clothes whilst at work. You need to buy new suits, shirts and ties as well. Yes I did say a few, when you're in work, you can't wear the same outfit all week, you will need a few co-ordinated outfits to rotate.
Invest in a Raincoat and an Umbrella!
Yes, these items are usually considered to be dull and boring whilst you are a student. I'm sure you were happy scurrying to lectures in the rain in your favourite jumper and wait until lunchtime until it dries out. However in the real world of employment, you looking like a drowned rat is not acceptable. Buy a raincoat and an umbrella and you will save yourself from a sever soaking!
Remember to shave!
This one is for the gentlemen only, but as a student, your more than likely to have either forgotten, or simply neglected your shaving duty on more than one occasion. Unless you wear a fully beard, you need to present yourself as clean shaven, as boring as that may sound!
Clean Your Shoes!
Once you have invested in your new outfits, don't let them down by not having clean shoes. Dirty and scuffed shoes do not leave a good impression of you and in all fairness they make you appear to be sloppy and not employment material.
You may need to get up a few minutes earlier to clean them, but it's a small price to pay if you want to either get into, or remain in full time employment!
