If you want to learn about the Beijing Olympics 2008, then you'll want to read this article. Specifically we'll discuss what will be taking place, the threat of a boycott due to the occupation of Tibet and the Beijing National Stadium. The 2008 Summer Olympics was awarded to Beijing in the People's Republic of China after a ballot of the International Olympic Committee in 2001. Athletes will compete in 302 events covering 28 sports. The Chinese government has worked hard to highlight China's continuing economic development, although China's occupation of Tibet has threatened to overshadow the torch relay and there has been some concern by athletes over the amount of pollution they will have to endure in China. Although there we some fears that some counties would boycott the 2008 Summer Olympics due to the question of Tibet, that has yet to materialize, although some prominent politicians and personalities have said they will boycott the games, including movie director Steven Spielberg. One of the most impressive sites for the Chinese Olympics will be the Beijing National Stadium. The stadium, nicknamed "the bird nest" due to its lattice-like concrete skeleton is designed to seat 80,000 spectators and will be the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies.
