For more than a century this breathtaking ski resort sited in the Engadine Valley in Switzerland has served as the location for Europe’s elite white turf horse racing competition.
The event has taken place since 1907 and it lasts the three first Sundays in February. For this year competition; ten of the best European thoroughbred horses and international jockeys compete in hard-fought gallop races around the oval track to provide an exquisite spectacle which offers rewards of more than USD 400,000; one of the event’s highlights is the Skikjoring races.
The annual White Turf St. Moritz attracts an estimate of 30,000 spectators who are located near the lake elegant paddocks and grandstands with the Engadine Alps serving as background. The race track is a large oval circuit basically a 80cm thick ice facade covered with some centimetres of snow.
The Skijoring race is unique in the world; and it certainly requires bravery, endurance, force and skiing skills for someone to gather the most points during the competition in order to be crowned “King of the Engadine”.
I dare say the event by itself is also one of its kind; especially when you see jockeys in ski goggles and face masks for protection, the vivid colours of protective ski jackets, horses carrying peculiar protective covers; the race just leaves the observer speechless in wonder of how they manage to carry on and keep on their feet. Obviously, not everyone keeps up with the pace.
St. Moritz annual racing event has among its prestigious sponsors; Credit –Suisse and BMW. There is no doubt the spectators’ support continues to unveil as more new fans visit this top of the world ice jewel.
