What is Keyword Research?

Let me ask you a question: "Why are you reading this right now?" You may have followed a link on this site to find this article, but chances are you typed the words "keyword research" or something similar into Google and hit the enter button. A list of results popped up on the screen and you clicked on the one that seemed most relevant to you. This is a prime example of keywords in action. The word or phrase you type into a search engine e.g. Google, is called a "search query." The search engine will "crawl" through millions of websites looking for the words or phrases in websites that match as closely as possible to the search query you entered. Once it has found the websites, it displays them in order of rank on the search engine results page. "So how does this affect me?" Let's say you create a website to advertise your window cleaning business. You hire a professional web designer to make the website. Great, a new up-to-date website. Nothing wrong with that. Well, actually there is a problem if you don't do any keyword research. Imagine keywords as your website's ZIP/postal code. How are prospective customers supposed to find you on the internet if they don't even know the name of your company? How are you going to achieve a good Google search engine rank? Imagine you are looking for a window cleaner. You wouldn't automatically know the name or URL of ten window cleaning businesses, would you? You would probably type something like "window cleaning" into Google. This search query could show millions of websites on the search results pages. In fact I'll type it into Google now and see how many results turn up… 3,620,000 That's a fair amount… if I had a window cleaning website I wouldn't want to contend with that much competition! "So how will my website be seen if there are so many results?" That's a good point! Most people don't even look beyond page one of Google let-alone page 1,00,000 or more! Unless you use keywords on your website you might as well NOT EVEN HAVE A WEBSITE. That's right; your website is literally invisible! "So which keywords should I use and how do I put them in my website?" Unless you know a programming language or have built your own website before, I can't go into all the finer detail. Keyword research is a very broad topic and there is a lot to learn. However, there are companies which specialise in keyword research and website optimization. Some of these companies can even build you a website from scratch and optimize it with all the correct keywords in one package. For the best keyword SEO services I would recommend KeyWeb.
