Backlinks are the most important thing to any and every web site. What are backlinks? They hyperlinks from someone else’s site to your site. If you leave a comment on someone’s website or blog or whatever, that link gets tracked backed to you. The search engines see this and it shows the search engines that your site is relevant to whatever the site was that you commented on. In other words it links you to that site. The more sites you link to, the more the search engines show preference to you. Now lets say you have a backlink to a site that has a page rank of 8. Search engines see this and before you know it your site will have a page rank of 8 because you are relevant to sites with a page rank of 8! What does a high page rank mean? Well, that’s how you rank in search engines. When people are doing a search (google search, yahoo search, etc.), the higher your page ranks, the more probability you will come up as the number one hit. That translates directly into sales. The most powerful kind of links is when the webmaster of a site links to you from his site. That ranks higher. Much higher. Think about it. If CNN.com, a high page rank site, writes a story and links to you and your website in that story, that’s far more important than you commenting on some story.
