Coordination and management are important factors in ensuring effective maintenance and repair of mobile infrastructure. The field environment is complex with both human and material resources which need to be managed in an efficient manner. The role of a field service manager is critical for smooth operations in such places.It has been argued for long as to who makes a good field service manager? On the one hand it is argued that a qualified human resources manager is required and technology can always be handled by down the line engineers. The job of a field service manager is to manage human resources rather than technology. At the same time questions are being raised about the efficacy of such a policy. The field environment is too complex to be handled by non experts. Experienced, battle scarred field engineers know what it takes to get things done and are best suited to take on the responsibilities of a field service manager. Other field engineers under his command respond better to one of their own kind than white collared management fresher trying to pull his weight around. But whatever may be the situation, role and responsibilities of a field service manager are undisputed. A good efficient manager can transform a good service unit into an excellent one and visa versa. if a manager doesn't handle his crew of engineers well and doesn't command their respect , a good setup can soon turn into a nightmare for all and mostly to the management. Scheduling and pipelining services and repair activities are more or less automated. But who will provide the input for the software themselves. The quasi expert systems require experienced field service manager to setup the database. In most instances, situations require   more complex response and coordination between many engineers from multiple disciplines. Even in routine repair activity, a software and hardware engineer is involved. In most of the instances, each camp claims that the problem is with the other camp. In these circumstances field service manager has to bring his experience into bearing and resolve conflict situations.
