With a plethora of services providers in the market, the need for specialized field services has increased manifold. A field service company typically caters to this growing requirement. The service menu differs widely and may encompass the entire gamut of services from managing the inventory, maintaining infrastructure, providing manpower and running operations. The trend of outsourcing the operations of a mobile operator to a field service company is picking pace. This has lead to mushrooming of such services. Plain old manpower outsourcing for meeting operational requirements however remains the mainstay of a field service company. With stringent service level agreements, need for experienced field professionals are increasing. At the same time the mobile industry is witnessing a shortfall in trained engineers and management professional. This has lead to a piquant situation in which established mobile service providers are poaching on others. Some experts believe that the situation can only get worse before it improves. To compensate for lack of manpower resources, automated data collection and monitoring equipment are being deployed. Equipment such as handheld computers, GPS systems and the like are providing real time data which is being utilized for scheduling and monitoring operations. Still, with present day technology it is not possible to eliminate human interface altogether.Some experts argue that outsourcing part of the operations to a field service company leads to suboptimal performance and may even be disastrous for operations. Such people advocate a comprehensive system which encompasses the entire operations of a mobile service company. Tight integration between the Supply Chain Management, customer Service management with field management services is recommended for efficient operations. Consideration of cost versus the benefits by conducting cost benefit analysis has thrown up more confusing results. At the present juncture there are one set of experts who recommend an integrated approach whereas another group terms such an exercise as futile, inefficient and costly. Truth may as usual lie somewhere between the two extremes.
