A mobile device is complex. Mobile service providers can remotely monitor, modify, alter and add multitude of services to mobile devices from a central control point. Device management is usually deployed through internet or microwave communication. The mobile environment is constantly in a flux and changes are required to be implemented frequently. A mobile instrument should therefore be capable of being altered through its software.An efficient device management would be easy to operate with minimum or no downtime. The mobile devices are becoming smarter by the day and features are being added at a frenetic pace. It has been predicted that mobiles of the future would be more like handheld PC
with multimedia capabilities. Already, video and audio files can be played on mobiles .It is possible to watch a complete movie on a mobile. Such applications require sophisticated device management tools. Security features like theft lock protection which include device locks are standard features of device management. Other capabilities are erasing of PIM and email data remotely and resetting mobile data to original factory settings. Modern mobile instruments are nowadays operating on a wide range of device platforms like Symbian, Windows mobile, Palm and BlackBerry.
Good Device management software should enable easy remote access to the mobile instrument. It should be capable of tracking mobiles effectively. It should be cost effective and provide security against theft. The effectiveness of a device management system is decided by its efficiency to manage and control mobile assets.
