The Social Networking Age Meets College Admissions

This is the the age of social networking. In this day and age Myspace and Facebook are just as much a part of a person's social circle as friends in school or at work. Social networks provide a way for users to contact classmates, family, co-workers and friends as well as meet people, blog, post photos and videos, exchange news and ideas, post work and more. Concerning education, this provides a great new way for a scholarship committee to familiarize themselves with the people that are the potential winners of free college scholarships a little better.

In recent years, universities and colleges began using the Internet and some of the different social networking tools for college PR and recruiting. Already students and potential students are able to do a university and college search using the Internet to find schools and read over their web pages. College admissions instructions and recruitment information is posted online at school websites and others as well. Many colleges and universities now offer and require that admissions applications and test scores be submitted online to simplify the application process. Social networking technology is also making the process easier for recruiting and admissions screening by allowing electronic submissions.

Not so long ago, students were forced to depend primarily on high GPAs and test scores to get noticed in college admissions. Athletes relied heavily on recruitment efforts, but those who lived in urban areas had a much better chance of being noticed than those in rural areas. Athletes can now send highlight videos using the internet to potential coaches and college recruiting offices anywhere in the world. Athletes in parts of the country that don't get much attention from admissions officers or aren't scouted often can make themselves noticeable using social networking and the Internet.

New internet services are getting universities and potential students in a way that wasn't an option in the past. The culmination of any high school senior's graduation is moving on to college. Students and prospective students have more resources than ever via social networking in order to promote themselves to and make connections with colleges and universities. While ACT/SAT test scores and GPAs still remain the main criteria, students that have less than perfect grade point averages and scores have an opportunity to present other things they're good at. College admission requirements and criteria is slowly being broadened to include students' experiences, activities, interests, jobs, work experience, talents, creativity and additional factors. These factors have always been an influence in college recruiting, but internet services make it easier than ever for students to showcase their talents and colleges and universities have the opportunity to easily see and recognize them. Athletes who participate in swimming, track, football, cheer, basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, hockey, softball and others can submit highlight videos via the internet that can be given to recruiting offices, college admissions offices and coaches. Recruitment tools and resources can be accessed and used through the internet.

Potential students benefit from social networking by creating relationships and networks with peers. Students are able to share dreams and information with others who have common hobbies and talents and then develop them. Many groups, organizations, and clubs exist within social network groups that bring students and prospective students together from all over the country. Potential studnets and former students can ask questions and give advice to help students facing college admissions.

Students have the opportunity to connect themselves with colleges and universities all over the country through their entire high school experience. No longer do college searches require you to visit college campuses, but students and prospective students can access college admissions and recommendations from their own home. Students have the chance to present to college admissions officers the things they have accomplished, what their aspirations and goals are and what kind of person they are.
