For people who pay tax, they are not
sure how long their tax records should be kept. When we say tax records,
we are talking about the tax returns and other documents, such as bank
statements, tax payment receipts etc.
Audits can prove to be a pain and to avoid this; you should keep every tax
return filed by you. It is common knowledge that the IRS keeps misplacing
or losing tax returns because of the huge number of returns they deal
with. It becomes your duty to ensure your records are kept safe, for
protecting yourself.
If you are filing your tax returns electronically, you must ensure that copies
of the returns are sent to you. It is not only the tax returns that
you have to save; you will have to keep all the supporting documents at least
for six years.
If you have a property that you are holding for a long time now, you have to
get yourself a filing cabinet to store the records of the purchase, any
mortgage statement or receipts that you have for the investments made in the
house. When you choose to sell your property, then all these documents are
required.
Your financial documents and tax returns along with all the supporting
documents may also be required if you are applying for a divorce. Make
sure to keep all the divorce agreement copies as well as all court related
records, including court orders.
You may never really have to use your tax records for anything, but then it is
always best to be safe than be sorry later, as you never know what could happen
tomorrow and if you are asked for your tax records and you do not have them,
then the consequences can be real harrowing and bad.
