London is one of the leading financial hubs in the world, with it being a very attractive place to work for many up and coming business professionals. If you are qualified and prepared for hard work there are plenty of job opportunities waiting for you in the city. If you are a UK resident you will obviously just need experience and the right qualifications to get a job, but if you are planning on moving from another country then you need a few more things, mainly a passport and a work visa.
The first step for finding your dream finance job is deciding which are of finance you are interested in. There are many areas to choose from such as risk analysis, financial analysis, accounting, banking and auditing, but you should chose an area that your experience and qualifications will suit.
Unfortunately these top level finance jobs can be hard to get, so you really do need a high business or finance related degree or qualification. A lot of employers are very picky when it comes to choosing candidates and you will need a good qualification to be even granted an interview for a job.
You should also have some experience in the field you are applying for. This is usually through an internship or training program. A lot of employers in London tend to prefer candidates with experience in public firms or the private sector.
As well as qualifications you will need to have certain skills that an employer can see through your CV and your experience, these will include good work ethic, mathematical skills, computing skills, communication skills, sales skills and problem solving skills.
To give yourself an advantage with finding a great job, you should keep up to date with financial news. This will involve reading finance sections in newspapers and industry magazines and not forgetting finance websites and blogs.
Your CV will look more professional if you join professional organisations such as the Association of chartered certified accountants (ACCA) and the Chartered insurance institute (CII).
The next stage in the process is finding a dream job to apply for, you should make a list of companies that you would like to work for a regularly check them for vacancies. It will also be worth looking to see if they offer internships or training programs as these can be a great way to get your foot in the door of a company. Checking for vacancies in leading newspapers and websites will be a great way for finding work. Also another way of getting a finance job is by using an upmarket recruitment agency that will have great experience in placing you in a relevant finance job that will be suited to you.
If you get an interview with a firm, make sure you do plenty of research. Looking into who is going to interview you, any testing and responses for possible questions and company information will help you be prepared for the interview.
