A wood burning fireplace should be cleaned and checked at regular intervals. By doing so you can go to bed safe in the knowledge that the wood still burning won't turn into a huge bonfire.
Be careful about the following points:-
1. When moving into a new apartment fitted with a brand new fireplace clean the unit before using it for the first time.
2. Ask your HVAC man to clean the fireplace and vent system if new. Ask him for advice on following a maintenance schedule on your own.
3. Keep your own owner's manual and other guidelines you have at hand while servicing the fireplace on your own.
4. Ensure that children are not near when carrying out maintenance work on hot surfaces. Also be careful when working on fireplaces that sufficient time has elapsed since the fire has been turned off.
5. Keep goods that catch fire easily far away from the fireplace.
6. Ensure that the fireplace is turned 'OFF' before undertaking any maintenance work.
7. Wiping the glass on the fireplace when it is hot may tend to set up disturbances in the internal structure of the glass causing brittleness. It may also break in doing so.
8. When the glass is cool put on gloves and eye shades while cleaning. Remember the position of the glass when removing it. If the glass is damaged contact an approved fireplace contractor to get it replaced.
9. Clean the fans and passages for air.
10. If possible install a carbon monoxide detector adjacent to the fireplace. You may skip this if you have a sealed direct vent unit.
11. If there are any unusual smells or flames it is a sign that repair is necessary.
12. The glass of the gas fire fireplace should be cleaned at regular intervals. It is quite simple. Just don't do it when hot and always follow the instructions in the manufacturer's manual.
Tell Tale signs to watch out for:-
Pilot light outages.
Slow starts.
Corrosion in the fireplace or vent.
Soot inside the fireplace.
Smell or fumes that cause burning of the eyes.
Unusual noise on ignition.
Symptoms of exposure to carbon monoxide like headache, nausea etc. In such a case turn off the fireplace.
Checking of Chimneys:-
1. Check the chimneys to see that the wire mesh at the sides is intact.
2. For mason work chimneys ensure that the mortar between the bricks is in place.
3. For metal chimneys check for missing nuts, bolts and screws.
4. Inspect and see if there is Creosote formation. Creosote is also a fire hazard and so should be removed. Creosote is a dark, hard substance formed by incomplete burning of wood.
