“We’re Oliver’s Army”, the small strangely attired group told me.
“Fantastic…Elvis Costello fans…you probably don’t want to go to Chelsea”, said I teasingly.
Of course, this was completely lost on the group’s young members as I knew it might be, but I was really just amusing myself; let me explain. I was standing outside the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane waiting to see Oliver the Musical and was in London specifically to make a night of it by taking in the show, exploring the delights of night time London afterwards and then retire to the Hotel that I had booked.
I had got an inclusive ‘Oliver the musical ticket deal’ over the internet, whereby I could book both hotel accommodation and tickets to Oliver the Musical in one fell swoop and for one inclusive price. This was doubly handy, as usually the tickets were in short supply, but by going through this route I was easily able to get allocated not only a ticket but also a great seat too.
And that is how I came to meet ‘Oliver’s Army’, not Elvis Costello fans at all but fans of Oliver the Musical who had come to see the show for the umpteenth time. They told me that this particular production was one of the best, with Rowan Atkinson taking the role of Fagin and with two new performers playing Nancy and Oliver in the musical.
Well I can tell you that the show was everything that the Oliver’s Army crew had said it was going to be…it was fantastically well staged with a cast of over 100 and with a brilliant performance by Rowan Atkinson…and of course, all the old classic hits were also there, hits like; Food Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, You've Got to Pick-a-Pocket or Two, I'd Do Anything and a great many more too.
When the show was over, I made my way out of the Theatre Royal and reflected on how good this particular production of Oliver the Musical had been; it was then that by chance, I bumped into the Oliver’s Army crew again and of all things, I ended up tagging along with them for a night out in London. In spite of their eclectic attire, they were actually a really decent bunch and we all had a whale of a time that night. By the end of the night I had seen Oliver the Musical, seen London by night and seen Oliver’s Army…but there was absolutely no sign of Elvis Costello anywhere!
