Hi there, Are you practicing the guitar and having fun? If you want to have fun playing the guitar by ear then firstly we need to look at and understand how to play the guitar by ear and what playing the guitar by ear is all about. For me the way that I play the guitar be ear is firstly when I hear a song I pick out all the main chords (like the chords G, C and D etc). Now when I have picked out all of the main chords I then go and get my guitar and start to play those chords or should I say I start to play those chords the best I can in the same style as the song I herd. I should explain that when I say that I start to play the song I mean that I pick out the main chords of the song and then I sort out what else I think needs to be added. Other things like the strumming style, other chords, and even the guitar solo if it is not too hard. Now I should say that when it comes to the strumming style it is really important to get right otherwise the song will not sound right at all. When you manage to sort out the strumming style then the rest starts to fall into place relatively easily although the song will still require a lot of practice though. How to Play the Guitar by ear To be able to play the guitar by ear is in my opinion not too hard because once you know what the different chords sound like you can then play them and figure out the song. In other words if you practice enough and know some of the main chords then you will be able to figure how to play the song. See most songs only have three or four main chords, the rest of the song is made up with things like the intro, fill-ins, lead breaks and extras to make the song that little bit better. As soon as you can recognize the main chords then you will be well on your way to be able to play your guitar by ear. You will know when you are getting good at playing guitar by ear because as time goes by and you practice and play your guitar you will find your self picking out notes and chords as if it is second nature, this is called experience. If you do get the odd chord wrong (and you will from time to time) then don't worry because over time you will get better, just keep practicing and playing your guitar. If you think of it like this, if you are driving down the freeway and hear a song you can sing along to it and as you get to know the song better you can sing the words easier because you have learned them and then you get the notes right as well so that you sing in tune. Well I think a guitar is very similar because as you practice and learn the chords you will be able to listen and predict what chord comes next and even if you don’t know the chord if you spend some time figuring it out then quite often you will be able to produce a sound or chord that is either the same or very close to the right chord. I learnt how to play a number of songs by ear and even when I had to be corrected on the odd chord here and there I still got the majority of the song right, and if I can learn how to play guitar by ear then any one can. Go for it and have learning to play the guitar by ear. Kind Regards, Carl
